I. Importing Finished Products: How Much Cost Do You Need to Bear?
1. Tariffs: A 20% "Hard Cost"
South Africa imposes a 20% import tariff on imported finished electric kettles. Electric kettles are classified under HS code 8516.79 (Unlisted Electric Heating Appliances), with an applicable tariff rate of 20%. Tariffs on other finished household appliances are typically between 15% and 20%.
Taking imports from China to South Africa as an example, since there is currently no free trade agreement between China and South Africa, importers need to pay tariffs according to the Most Favored Nation (MFN) rate.
2. Value Added Tax (VAT): 15%, and "Tax on Top of Tax"
In addition to tariffs, importers also need to pay a 15% Value Added Tax (VAT).
The calculation method for Value Added Tax (VAT) is noteworthy-it's not simply calculated based on the value of the goods, but rather on the "Added Tax Value (ATV)":
ATV = (CIF Value + Customs Duty) × 1.10
Then: VAT = ATV × 15%
In other words, VAT is calculated by adding a 10% "upliftment" to the value of the goods plus customs duty. This means you not only pay tax on the goods themselves, but also on customs duty and freight costs.
1.3 Logistics Efficiency: Only 8,200 Units per Container
Finished electric kettles take up significant packaging space. For a standard 1.8L electric kettle, a 40HQ container holds approximately 8,200 finished units.
2. CKD Model: Where Does It Save? How Much?
2.1 What is CKD?
CKD (Completely Knocked Down) refers to a production model where products are disassembled into all component parts - heating elements, thermostats, power bases, handles, housings, etc. - exported as parts, and assembled locally in the target market.
2.2 Duty Advantage: Some Parts at 0%
CKD parts are classified under entirely different HS codes than finished goods. Electric kettle components typically fall under HS Code 8516.90 (parts of electric heating appliances), with some parts eligible for 0% import duty.
Even for components that do incur duties, the rates are far lower than the 20% applied to finished goods. According to South Africa's International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC), CKD assemblers can qualify for full duty rebates on imported components, whereas SKD (Semi-Knocked Down) assemblers still pay duties ranging from 12.2% to 20%.
2.3 Logistics Advantage: 15,000 Sets per Container
CKD parts use flat-packed packaging. The same 40HQ container can hold approximately 15,000 CKD sets - nearly twice the volume of finished units (8,200). This means significantly lower shipping costs per unit.
2.4 Investment Return: 2–3 Months Payback
CKD assembly lines require relatively simple equipment (such as welding machines, spot welders, and assembly stations), meaning a low investment threshold. At a monthly capacity of 10,000 units, the investment payback period is approximately 2–3 months.
